LEGAL QUESTION: @NateTheLawyer When do laws come into effect. On 2023-05-06 in Kent, Washington a woman was arrested in possession of illegal drugs. The city of Kent passed the law banning public possession of illegal drugs four days prior. The supervisor(at about 09:52) called to the scene advised that the charges cannot be filled because he and other police have not been briefed on the law(There Is No Excuse For Ignorance Of The Law...). The supervisor also opined that perhaps Washington State might rule against the City of Kent Washington. What business does a uniform officer have regarding possible future legal rulings with regards to enforcing the law. I think there are many questions here.
It always seemed odd to me that the States would legalize drugs in direct violation of Federal Law and here we have an example of a City passing laws contrary to State Laws. Nate, I would be interested in your thoughts on the various points I have mentioned regarding this matter.
