The breach of the right-wing provocateur was simply a way of “stirring up some drama,” the attacker tells WIRED. But the damage could have been much worse.
The hacker who claimed responsibility for compromising the Twitter account of right-wing commentator Matt Walsh says he did it solely to stir up controversy and chaos on Twitter, according to an interview with WIRED.
The hacker, who goes by the alias Doomed, claims to have used SIM swapping to take control of Walsh's phone, which he says was compromised with the help of an "insider." The attack also reportedly granted the hacker access to Walsh's private emails on Google and Microsoft. While Doomed caused no financial harm, he did post a series of out-of-character tweets on Walsh's account, including jabs at fellow conservative media figures and denigrating remarks about the LGBTQ community. Doomed claims to have signed out of Walsh's accounts and tried to return access, and says he has no plans to continue targeting Walsh.
